Window on the World: An Operation World Prayer Resource
(revised edition, 2018) (list contains affiliate links)
**NOTE: FOR SOME PEOPLE GROUPS THAT COVER MULTIPLE COUNTRIES, YET SCANT INFORMATION IS AVAILABLE ABOUT THE PEOPLE GROUPS AS A WHOLE, I SELECTED ONE OF THEIR MOST POPULOUS COUNTRIES NOT COVERED ELSEWHERE IN THE BOOK.
A look into various cultures and people groups around the world by exploring music, arts and crafts, food, videos, and more for various sections of the book. Please let me know of any mistakes or broken links, any ideas you might have, or any specific knowledge of any country and its needs. Also, let me know if I got anything wrong because I am unfamiliar with all these cultures.
I have tried to include a video or two of the culture or people groups, a craft or activity that represents that region, some food ideas from that region or people groups that you might wish to try, and some of the sounds or music of the people or area if I can find some, as well as extra books to read.
Because of this, you might like to read ahead to see if you need any supplies for anything you wish to try and to order any books you want. I chose to go with picture books for the most part, even though there are many great longer books about some of the areas because picture books are more accessible for most people to find, libraries are more likely to carry them, and they are easier to fit into a busy reading schedule. Because of this, you might like to read ahead to see if you need any supplies for anything you wish to try and to order any books you want. I try hard to stick to ones that offer some cultural insights or visual beauty of the region and to provide a few options in case you can’t find some of the books. I have also copied and pasted partial book descriptions to help you, so this will be quite a long page.
P 4-7: Introduction
- The book was created by Operation World. You can access their website for a variety of resources. Specifically, they have a prayer of the day, where they encourage people around the world to pray for various people groups, as well as many other resources. You can sign up for their daily prayer email or get their daily prayer app.
- We have loved the Tinker Crate subscriptions, and Atlas Crate is their latest addition. We are still awaiting our first box, and it looks like we can’t currently order any particular box and match what we are learning about, but they still look fun. The website says Atlas Crate is perfect for children ages 6-11, and if you use my referral code, you get $10 off. https://www.kiwico.com/refer?i=VeronicaS16
- Little Passports is another subscription program for children ages 6-10, with a little passport book in their first crate to stamp as they learn about different countries, and I believe with this referral code, you can get up to $25.00 off. https://fbuy.io/littlepassports/veronica

- I usually try to post a video of sites to see in each country, with some vocals to explain a tiny bit about each place, but I’m having trouble with this for Syria due to the limited tourism after the war. Please let me know if you find any good videos. In the meantime, here is a site with beautiful photos.
- One of the picture books listed below, Stepping Stones, was designed using rock art by Syrian artist Nizar Ali Badr. We found this type of rock art to be absolutely beautiful, and my children immediately began gathering rocks to make their own rock art. Here are more of his sculptures.
- While most children will find more than enough rocks on a simple nature walk or lining your driveway, decorative stones can also be purchased, or for those very creative children, rock, crystal, and quartz kits can add a splash of color.

- I found two pictures of a relatively simple-looking craft that could be an Emirati man. There are no instructions, but they look easy enough to make, and an Emirati woman could be made similarly just using a longer headdress in different colors.

- Bible Verses:
- Luke 19:40 “I tell you,” he replied, “if they keep quiet, the stones will cry out.”
- Matthew 21: 18 Early in the morning, as Jesus was on his way back to the city, he was hungry. 19 Seeing a fig tree by the road, he went up to it but found nothing on it except leaves. Then he said to it, “May you never bear fruit again!” Immediately the tree withered. 20 When the disciples saw this, they were amazed. “How did the fig tree wither so quickly?” they asked. 21 Jesus replied, “Truly I tell you, if you have faith and do not doubt, not only can you do what was done to the fig tree, but also you can say to this mountain, ‘Go, throw yourself into the sea,’ and it will be done. 22 If you believe, you will receive whatever you ask for in prayer.”
- 1 Chronicles 16:31 Let the heavens rejoice, let the earth be glad;
let them say among the nations, “The Lord reigns!”
32 Let the sea resound, and all that is in it;
let the fields be jubilant, and everything in them!
33 Let the trees of the forest sing,
let them sing for joy before the Lord,
for he comes to judge the earth.
